I am not typically one for slow paced films that smell like an Inde flick, but I have to tell you, this movie was very well done and Kate Winslet’s performance was worthy of all the hype it is getting. The movie is based around the Holocaust and the character of a boy who has an affair with Kate Winslet when he is 15 years old. The affair involved a lot of sex and Kate Winslet nipple and full boob shots (so it had its pluses for the men who attend to see it), but also involved Hannah (played by Kate Winslet) asking the boy to read to her before they have sex. The boy, driven by his teenage hormones, of course is willing to do this. We later find out that Hannah is illiterate and uses people to read to her and then moves away (or has them killed, in the case of some Jewish girls at the concentration camp she was a guard at during the war) before her shameful secret is revealed. The movie was sad (so women would like it) but also had a touch of history (being set around the time of the war) and a lot of nudity, so the men also get their fill here. An overall win-win for everyone who pays the admission to go and see it. Now, beyond the shallow reasons I give above for going to see it, there are also some reasons that the avid movie connoisseur/snob would want to go and see it. Winslet’s performance is by far the best of her career and the plot and cinematic shots are quite amazing. Go and see it, worth the time.
