Karl MaldenKarl Malden, an Academy Award and Emmy winning actor passed away yesterday. He was 97.

Malden’s family informed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences of his death on Wednesday. Malden served as the academy’s president from 1989-92.

Malden won a best supporting actor Oscar for his role as Mitch in “A Street Car Named Desire,” but he may have been best known for uttering the famous tagline for the American Express card: “Don’t leave home without it.”

He made his screen debut in the 1940 movie “They Knew What They Wanted,” and starred as Detective Mike Stone in the 1970s TV series “The Streets of San Francisco” with Michael Douglas.

Another sad day in Hollywood.
