Billy Bob Thornton Insults Canada

theboxmasters 300x300 Billy Bob Thornton Insults CanadaBilly Bob Thornton’s band canceled the rest of its Canadian tour after the actor compared the country’s fans to mashed potatoes with no gravy.

First of all, Billy Bob Thornton is in a band?

Second of all, isn’t being compared to gravy-less mashed potatoes a compliment in Canada?  I thought they loved being compared to food?

BBT’s band is called “The Boxmasters” and they were touring with Willie Nelson and Ray Price throughout the Great White North.   Their cancellation came after being booed at a show in Toronto.

This all started last week when Thornton made a surly appearance on CBC radio’s “Q” with host Jian Ghomeshi.  The Oscar winning actor rudely mumbled through answers, used foul language, and didn’t appreciate being asked about his film career or lack thereof.  His prima donna attitude culminated in an insult that sullied the name of the good people living in America’s attic.

“Canadian audiences seem to be very reserved,” Thornton explained. “We tend to play places where people throw things at each other. Here, they just sort of sit there. And it doesn’t matter what you say to ‘em. … It’s mashed potatoes but no gravy.”

Maybe the Canadian audiences just sit there because they are too busy contemplating Thornton’s immense lack of musical talent.

The best line from the interview was when BBT said that he “pretty much grew up a musical historian.” Really? That's odd because I grew up an art critic and right now I’m raising my kids as literary agents.

Willie Nelson’s website says The Boxmasters canceled due to an illness to a band member and to several members of the crew.  Note to BBT: if you’re going to ruin your band’s tour at least say you’re the one that’s sick.

Thornton tried to explain that his statement was taken out of context.  He also claimed that the radio show’s producers promised there would be no discussion of his “film career.”

This isn’t the first time that a celebrity trying to make it big in another genre refused to talk about what made them famous in the first place.  It’s quite ridiculous because they wouldn’t be able to try something new if they weren’t famous in the first place.  And when the day comes and their fame has fleeted, these attention whores will beg anyone with a microphone to talk to them.

The bottom line for BBT, is people want to see him act (or at least they did) not listen to him sing.  If people really wanted to watch him prance around a stage he would be a rock star instead of a movie star.  Thornton should be very thankful that he’s allowed to do both.

  • “didn’t appreciate being asked about his film career or lack thereof.”

Didn’t happen. He was never asked about his film career. Watch the interview.

  • It was a general summation. Of course no interviewer is going to actually say, “what about your film career?” to any one, even actors who want to talk about their film careers.

However, it was clear that Ghomeshi wanted to address BBT’s acting career (like he said it was the elephant in the room)and it was painfully clear that BBT didn’t even want to mentioned he was an actor. Even though, his band is where it is because of the fame he earned as an actor.

  • What are you talking about musicman? Half the interview was about Thorton not wanting to talk about his “film career.”

  • H-rax, watch the video. Half the interview was about his acting career because he wouldn’t answer any questions about his music career. I’m still interested to find out how building monster models influenced his music.

  • it takes real skill to act as spacey and random as Billy Bob did in that interview…
