I was doing some volunteer work at a retirement home last week, watching midday television and playing boardgames when The Price is Right came on. If you don’t know the culture in a retirement village, the only acceptable way to react when The Price is Right comes on is to stop what your doing and shut up. So, that is what I did. We watched for a couple minutes and I noticed that these people hate to see winners on this show. Everyone is screaming the prices before Drew Carey drops the hinged card, and when the contestant gets the prize everyone turns sour. I was trying to figure out what the hell the problem was, so, being the investigate genius that I am, I asked during a commercial.
The sweetest lady in the place turns to me and says how there is a big conspiracy on TPIR. She tells me that the white people on the show are sent up there to lose on purpose. She lowers her voice a little and says that it’s mostly black people home at 11:00-12:00 and that if these people are far more apt to watch when they see “One of their own” win. The commercial break is over and I have to wait until just before the Showcase Showdown to get to the bottom of this thing.
In the Showcase there is a young white girl and a middle aged Black woman. The white girl bids around thirteen or fourteen thousand on a showcase well worth twenty-five. The black woman bids thirty-six on a showcase worth forty and while she is celebrating the woman turns back around says, “That bitch sandbagged it just like I said.”
