As the impending election looms, I hear people across party lines, age denominations, and races complain about their choices. “Voting is so absurd,” they say, apparently referring to the notion that no matter who gets elected, people still get stuck with a bad representation of their needs. Democrats talk big talk about helping people, championing human rights, environmentalism, and social programs, but when the ballots are filed, they usually fail at all or most of the goals they outlined for the people who elected them. Republicans promise safety, financial security, and values, but come November 5th, they inevitably raid your 401K and start wars that can’t be won. Truth be told, the political system seems well crafted to keep anyone from doing much of anything ever. Politicians are reduced to tabloid stories, their policies are forgotten or misunderstood, and we all wait around for four years to be inundated with another seemingly endless news cycle about the jackals in Washington. During our breaks from the presidential politics, we get local and state election to keep us busy between episodes of “American Idol,” and we all wish someone would just wipe out Washington with a plague of locusts or something. No doubt anarchy would ensue, but at least we’d get the feeling that something was changing besides the pronunciation of the President’s last name. So until politicians get different or I become a politician, soaking up every last ounce of free, high-quality health care, white people will hate politics.
