Superbowl XLIII

The final whistles of the NFC and AFC Championship Games have been blown, and what a great pair of ballgames we were all treated to on this glorious Sunday in January.  In the first game, the Arizona Cardinals defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 32-25 to earn their first ever birth to the Superbowl.  The second game featured a snowy affair between the stingy Baltimore Ravens defense and the gritty Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Steelers came out on top 23-14.

NFC Championship Game Recap

For much of the NFL’s fan base, the NFC Championship game featured a matchup of two teams no one expected to be there.  The casual fan planned to watch the game, hoping for a good entertaining game but without much hope that this would be a historic event.  Well, for those of us who managed to escape Sunday chores to catch this one we sure weren’t dissapointed.  The game started off fast for Arizona and they took a huge lead into halftime as it looked like Philly was ready to roll over and die.  Then came an action packed second half that saw the Eagles storm all the way back to take a one point lead with a few minutes to play.  All that excitement was surely enough to satisfy even the most casual of NFL fans…..but Kurt Warner and his peaking Cardinals where not satisfied and stormed back for a game winning drive that put a typically awful Arizona Cardinals franchise into the Superbowl.  Kurt Warner threw four touchdowns, three to the amazing Larry Fitzgerald, and looks to capture yet another Superbowl ring.

AFC Championship Game Recap

The AFC Championship Game turned out as we all expected it to.  Going into the game, everyone knew that the Ravens’ defense was one of the best and the two teams figured to fight to the death in what would be a hard hitting and low scoring affair.  Hard hitting it was, as evident by the fact that Willis McGahee was carted off the field in a stretcher late in the fourth quarter after getting hit harder than I have ever seen an NFL player get hit in my thirty years of watching football.  McGahee was moving his limbs but was experiencing significant neck pain well after the game (we hope he is ok, as that hit looked absolutely insane).  The Raven’s Joe Flacco threw three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown by Troy Polamalu late in the game to secure the victory for Pittsburgh.  The Steelers head to the Superbowl for the second time in recent memory as they look to win their sixth all time NFL Championship in Tampa on February 1.

A great weekend of football that is sure to have us hoping for more come two weeks from today.
