Tim Tebow Tim Tebow Says...Meet My Mom, You Anti Life BastardsOne of the biggest attractions for the Super Bowl (especially for people who do not know a thing about the actual game) are the multi-million dollar ads – all of which are broadcasted in 30 seconds or less. We (the American public) enjoy Super Bowl ads for a variety of reasons. A) They are something we haven’t already seen a million of times B) they are sometimes funny and C) GoDaddy always buys ad space (which is a good thing – assuming you’ve seen the commercials and were not busted by your girlfriend).

Yet, the biggest controversy over this year’s ads did not surround Danica Patrick ripping off her blouse, but rather a commercial featuring former Heisman trophy winner, Tim Tebow. In the ad, Tebow is featured alongside his mom. Nothing controversial about that scenario - unless, of course, Tim and his mother start making out. However, that never happened.

Still, this rather simple commercial was the topic of controversy and heated debate over the past couple of weeks. The ad was financed by Focus on the Family, a Christian organization which wanted to profile an outspoken Christian athlete.  The chaos, however, was over the rumors that the ad would endorse a pro-life stance on abortion.

Oh, nah ya didn’t!

Sports, much like the Academy Awards, are not a place for voicing your opinion on political issues. Actors have maintained complete discipline, so why can’t athletes follow suit!?!? I turned on the Super Bowl, because I wanted to drink beer, slam down potato chips, watch GoDaddy commercials, and make bad decisions with an old fling who was once universally known around the high school as “The Backseat.”

Athletes can praise God after they score six to cover my spread, but they can never, ever take a stance on anything important. God forbid we allow such a thing as an intellectual athlete.

Did anyone actually see the commercial (if not, reference below)? I mean really!?!? Did anyone need to get that upset over 33 seconds of life? I mean, worst case scenario, they could have countered with the infamous slogan from the Roe era: “Celebrate the bent clothes hanger.”
