Yankees Open New Stadium With Humiliating Loss

yankeeshomestadium 300x199 Yankees Open New Stadium With Humiliating LossIt was Opening Day for the New York Yankees and the debut of their new stadium. The entire sports world was a flutter. ESPN was hyperventilating with glee over the prospect of reporting this Yankee milestone.  And the venerable and verbose Bob Costas was calling the game for the MLB Network.

The $161 million pitcher, CC Sabathia, was on the mound as the $200 million N.Y. Yankees payroll squared off against the hapless 3-7 Cleveland Indians in the new $1.5 billion Yankee Stadium.

So how did the Yankees fair?

I’ll tell you once I stop laughing. The Yankees lost 10-2 and are now a pedestrian 5-5 on the season. Oh my god… stop it… my side hurts! You mean to tell me they opened a new ballpark and the Yankees score only two runs! Oh that’s hilarious!

Some of the Yankee faithful paid up to $2,625 to watch Yankee batters have one pathetic at bat after another. Can someone say refund? At least they got to see most of the Yanks bullpen pitch; soon-to-be-fired manager Joe Girardi used six pitchers in the game.

The old Yankee stadium was dubbed “The House that Ruth Built.” These new digs should be called “The House That Cody Ransom Left Runners on Base.” A-Rod’s replacement at third base left seven men on base. The team as a whole left 23 men on base.

Yes, Alex Rodriguez is out of the line up with hip problems but even when he returns he’s not going to pitch.

Sabathia was okay.  After throwing a hefty 122 pitchers he left the game in the sixth inning after giving up just one run, five hits and five walks.  However, the bullpen was simply awful.

Jose Veras came in and allowed three earned runs to pick up the new stadium’s first loss. In the seventh inning, gas can Danaso Marte allowed six earned runs including a grand slam to Grady Sizemore.

Who gives up a grand slam in a game this important?

Grady Sizemore spoiled the Yanks stadium opener with a grand slam in the seventh inning.

By the time Sizemore crossed the plate the Yankee faithful were chanting “We want Swisher!” That’s a references to the Yankees right fielder.  He pitched earlier in the week during a blowout loss at Tampa Bay.

It’s only one loss—a real bad one—but watching ESPN and the MLB Network run damage control is priceless.  Their golden goose is struggling and they have no answer.   During the game, a MLB Network anchor actually said, “hopefully the Yankees can make a comeback.”  This is pretty much a disaster for MLB who desperately needs New York to reach the post season.

By the way, the Yanks opened their previous ballpark, way back in 1923, with a win.  Babe Ruth homered in the game as he led the pinstripes to a 4-1 win over the Boston Red Sox.
